Substance Abuse Therapies

At Huntington Beach Detox in Orange County, we believe that an individual who enters an alcohol detox or drug detox program should also be supported with additional therapies, services, and amenities.

Because addiction is a disease that effects the mind, body, spirit, and soul – we believe that a holistic approach to treatment is absolutely necessary. A holistic approach is a substance abuse therapy that encompasses the whole person. This is why we employ a multidisciplinary team of experts who will help you on your path to recovery.

The first step to any inpatient treatment is a medically-assisted detox. During detox, the physical aspect of your addiction will be addressed first. This means that we will work to rid your body of any harmful chemicals and toxins that have built up overtime. A medical staff will observe your detox symptoms on a 24/7 basis and we will administer medications that will help aid you in decreasing pain and physical discomfort.

Clinical Therapies

During your detox, you will also be supported with various clinical services including individual therapy, group therapy, case management, experiential therapy, and family therapy. It is important to receive clinical services in order to address the underlying reasons for an individual’s addiction in order to fully heal. If an individual only addresses the physical aspect of their addiction, than the cravings may be too hard to overcome and the individual could end up relapsing.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a form of therapy where an individual meets one on one with their assigned therapist or clinician. During these sessions, a client will dive deeper into some of the emotional and mental aspects of their dependence on a substance. In many instances, addiction is part of other co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. It is important to address both the mental health and substance-use in order to fully heal from addiction.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most commonly employed method in an individual therapy. This approach is solution-oriented and focused on the goal of achieving abstinence from substances. CBT works under the assumption that addiction is a learned behavior and can be unlearned by recognizing unhealthy patterns of thought. It is a useful tool in changing your thinking.

Your therapist will work off your individualized treatment plan to assess your goals, teach you coping skills, and help you manage emotions without using substances.

Group Therapy

Group therapy works by providing opportunities to become intermixed with a community of people who are also struggling with substance-use and addiction. In group therapy, there is an opportunity to share positive stories, and process the behaviors around your addiction. Group therapy pairs one or more therapists with a small group of people in order to educate, support, and grow. Some of our groups including relapse prevention, stress reduction, spiritual care, recovery management skills building, and emotional regulation.

Case Management

Case Management is a service in which you work with a case manager who will support you in further reaching your goals or dealing with your responsibilities. A case manager may file FMLA paperwork for you, help with your legal issues, and set up appropriate aftercare for when you are finished with inpatient treatment.

Family Therapy

Addiction is a family disease. In many instances, families cope with addiction in unhealthy ways, such as living in denial or by picking up the pieces of their loved one’s addiction. Their lives often revolve around addiction and there are endless arguments about getting help and stopping their addictions. Enabling and co-dependency are some of the topics that are worked on in family therapy. These behaviors can foster an addiction as well as make recovery more difficult. In family therapy, the assigned clinician will participate in both individual sessions with the family, as well as individual sessions with the family and their loved one.
